Symptoms of TMD may include, but are not limited to:
- Muscle pain around the jaw joints (in front of your ears)
- Cracks, popping or clicking sounds when you move your jaw
- Limited movement of the jaw
- Facial muscle spasms
- Headaches that begin in front of your ears
A TMJ splint works by reducing the pressure on your jaw joints or by realigning your bite. We can accomplish this through a stabilization splint, also known as a bite guard or bite plate. These splints are made of a hard acrylic resin, which can be customized to fit comfortably over the upper or lower teeth depending on your needs. It actively prevents your teeth from making a misalignment while also correcting a bite misalignment. Typically splints are worn for 24 hours a day, however depending on your condition we may only recommend a splint to be worn at night while sleeping.
