Scaling and root planing involves a more in-depth thorough cleaning treatment and is recommended for those who may be suffering from periodontal disease. Also known as gum disease, this type of gum infection is caused by bacteria and plaque building up over time and causing inflammation. While serious, periodontal disease is treatable in early stages, but can result in bone or tooth loss if left untreated.

When your gums become inflamed, the bacteria causes your gums to push away from the teeth creating pockets. Once these pockets form, it is impossible to clean them with brushing alone. Scaling and root planing allows us to clean and remove any buildup from these pockets so that you can maintain your oral health.

During the scaling portion of treatment, our staff will use a scaling tool to remove any plaque, bacteria or tartar in the pocket, around the affected tooth, and below the gumline to clear out and prevent infection.

After the scaling portion of the treatment is complete, we will begin the root planing process. Root planing allows us to remove the pocket caused by bacteria and smooth out your tooth’s roots. Once the root is smoothed, the gums can begin to reattach and have a better chance of fully healing.

Some patients report mild discomfort during treatment and sensitivity after for a few days. We will devise a customized treatment plan to help manage any discomfort and pain you may feel during and after the procedure. During recovery and afterward, it is important that you practice good oral hygiene habits to ensure that periodontal disease does not return or become worse after treatment.
